stripped it and the laser moves to position but only seems to have a very dull red light from about half of the lens, tried cleaning etc just seems strange that the discs dont even attempt to spin

around the bottom magnet there is a black layer, kind of a gripper. which may full of dust causing it not to grip the disk. try giving it a clean with a cotton bud and cleaning alcohol.
i got a ps2 off ebay for £1.05 and that was the problem

just tried that-no difference, whats puzzling is that the motor makes no attempt to turn

what is the model of your ps2
sound like the dvd side of the laser has gone ..test it with a cd-rom game first blue underside....if spins up then the laser is only good for cd-rom games ..and wont play dvd-rom if no spin after testing... sometimes the la chip or ba chip depending of the model of ps2 has blown ,that will stop it from spinning or even a completely dead laser will stop it too......: multi :

dont attempt 2 spin with anydisc, laser looks pitted and very weak red glo when trying to focus, spindle dont even attemt tomove, tried with every type of diisc

Moving into position and not spinning is classic dead LASER behaviour.

Is it a v12 PS2?

What's the model number.

You can get a replacement LASER for around £25

Could be a mainboard fuse, BA/LA chip fault.
Faulty ribbon connector.
Incorrectly aligned laser.

Have you attempted the pot trick?.

Have you had any luck yet.

I just repaired mine yesterday, it had the same problem altough it was version 9.
Check the following fuses for V12 mainboard. You'll need a multimeter or ohm meter.

  1. PS1 0.5A
  2. PS2 0.4A
  3. PS3 3.15A
  4. PS4 3.15A
  5. PS5 1.6A
  6. PS6 0.7A
  7. PS7 0.7A
  8. PS8 1.5A
  9. PS11 3.15A
  10. PS13 0.4A
  11. PS14 2.5A
  12. PS17 2.5A
  13. F1 6.3A
If any of above arn't working replace them with a similar one.

The following fuses are resettable, but in rare cases they have to replaced.
  1. TH3000 1.25A
  2. TH4001 1.1A
  3. TH4002 1.1A
Hope this helps.

this is a classic symptom of low laser output thats why it does not spin try turning up the dvd pots if no go then replace the laser
