pci to usb host controller

I'm having trouble getting my usb pen to work in computer it receives power & driver usb in device manager are fine, what come up is it needs the pci to usb host controller software, ive tried the motherboard disc & a nec usb disc to no avail any idieas please

Just quickly, how do you know it is getting power? Is there a light on the stick that comes on?

I dont suppose any other devices work in the same port do they, like a mouse or keyboard?
