PC Monitor needed

hi i also wanted to know as i have never hahd a SATA drive before when i buy my Samsung hard drive which is SATA ....what connects to it?....(In my exisitng PATA Drive i connect a Ribbon cable and a Power connector and it has its jumpers)

Can you tell me what connects to the SATA Drive??

You need a sata cable. If the PSU doesn't have sata power connectors you'll also need a molex to sata adapter.

Most motherboards with SATA connections will come with the sata cables (unless you're buying refurb, b-grade or second hand).

Maplin have the data cables at £9.99 each, overclockers.co.uk have them for ~£2.50 and ebay have them from £0.01+p&p. Power adapters also available - ebay even have kits.

hi yes i know they connect to the MOBO via SATA Cable ...i was interested in knowing which other cables connect to it.....you said a sata power connects to the HARD Drive directly from the PSU...can you give me a link that shows this as an image so i know what a Sata power cable looks like .....

also this leads me to another question......what connections would i need then in the PSU to ensure all my components will be able to run ok?....

SATA HDDs just have the SATA cable and power connections. SATA enabled optical drives (i.e. DVD and blu-ray) have the legacy CD-audio connections in addition.

There are also pins you can jumper to limit the drive to 32GB and/or limit the the driver to SATAI speeds (150Gb/s).

SATA power connectors look like this:
sata15pin.jpg

right ok so these i presume come from the PSU...so how do i know in a psu spec that it has this

To take the Corsair digicol recommended as an example:
Output Connector(s): 4 PIN internal power, 15 pin Serial ATA power, 6 pin PCI Express power, power 24 pin ATX with detachable 4 pin section, power 8 pin EPS12V with detachable 4 pin ATX12V section.

Thats from the spec sheet at the bottom of the ebuyer page, and they all should have one.

hi what about if i needed more then just one SATA power connection

In the case of SATA and 4pin molex, there's normally 3 on the same lead out of the PSU. e.g.

PSU - SATA - SATA - SATA
PSU - molex - molex - molex
PSU - molex - molex - floppy

ohright so they wil provide more then 1 sata power cables and these molex power cables too then...

can someone recommend me a PSU then?

Any of the three digicol posted will sort you out if you don't intend going down the multiple graphics cards route: https://www.digitalworldz.co.uk/showthread.php?p=1302392#post1302392

How much RAM are you going for?
<3Gb stick with 32bit XP.
>3Gb go for a 64bit OS, I'll go out on a limb and actually recommend Vista Home Premium or Ultimate. If there are features of the business edition that you want go for ultimate as business has no built in media center abilities.

hi i am going for 4GB RAM but I think i will go for a 32 bit operating system because i want all applications to work.....i have heard not many poeple have 64 as some applications are not even supported even office at times...I was thinking Windows XP as VISTA is not bug proof as yet either?????????????

If you're going for 4Gb you need to know that 32bit windows may not see all of it and report that you only have 3-3.5Gb. In XP you can add the /PAE switch to the boot.ini but this isn't guaranteed to work.

32bit applications run fine in 64bit Vista and XP. The issue is with drivers, especially with 'obsolete' hardware.

oh right so everything will work fine like office etc?....windows updates etc.....what will i have problems with then? )

my spec so far please someone help em for the rest of it..

Mobo: Asus P5K-Premium/Wifi-AP - need to buy its around 100 (Amazon)
CPU: Quad Core CPU Q9300 - 80 quid new
Memory: Corsair DDR2 4GB 800Mhz - 57.15 (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=632574)
HDD: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=708681 - 65.74 (scan)
DVD Drive: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=813878 - 19.26 (Scan)

CASE.......(around 40 quid max)???????
PSU:....(around 50 quid max)??????
GRAPHICS CARD......(looking to get one which is less then 80quid)????????
Monitor: (ve seen dell ones on their site for around 130 quid)???

Please help on the four components i have left to get???

As you've spec'ed up from Scan...

Case - CoolerMaster Cavalier 3 - £45.81: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=134904
PSU - 450W Corsair VX series (the same one digicol recommended) - £44.05: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=644038
GFx card -
Monitor - go for the Dell! I've just checked the spec and I've yet to find a non-budget brand with DVI for close to that price. Otherwise I did find the VGA only 20" LG L204WS-SP for £126.30 on the Scan website: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=691089

Can I suggest that with the FSB of the motherboard and the CPU being 1066Mhz you go for some DDR2-1066 (aka PC2-8500), be sure to check the QVL sheet on the ASUS website.

Also that motherboard is available from Scan for £103.17. The cheapest I found it on Amazon was £106+p&p, as you're already paying postage for the Scan order you might want to get it from them?
