Optical Digital Audio to speakers

Thanks guys.
I have rca outputs on both my DVD player and stb.
Can I hook these straight up to my speakers and just control the audio from the stb or dvd?

Will RCA still deliver audio to the speakers if there is a HDMI connection to the TV or will audio default to the HDMI port?

Even if this works I take it I'll have to turn the Stb off when I turn my TV off otherwise audio will keep coming through the speakers?

Cheers

Neither the stb nor the dvd player has audio driver circuitry so only produce a non amplified audio signal which isn't powerful enough to drive speakers. As previously stated you would need your own amplifier or use active speakers.

Thanks for all the great comments thus far guys.
I've gone and sourced myself some active speakers.
Now I just need to lay down the stereo cable around the room.
Will any type of copper wire do?
I'm thinking of taking apart an old Ethernet cable.

Cheers
