iPhone No emails unless I open app

Has anyone else encountered a problem with emails on iPhones.
Recently emails that have been sent to me "will not display a notification"
My notifications is on and some times they come through live and other times they don't?
It's not a network issue as I'm always on wifi or 4G.
It's the preinstalled "mail" app that's built into iOS.

I will receive the email but most times I have to open the app to see.

Had the same problem years ago, not sure if this will work because iphones have changed since my 4S.
but this is what worked for me

Touch "Settings" > "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" > "Fetch New Data". Make sure "Push" is enabled and then look at your email account and make sure that it is also set at "Push".

And aslo make sure "dont disturb" isnt enabled for certain times of the day.
