this may sound silly but if i buy a eurovox ex5000 will i need to connect to pc first or will it pik up channels straight out of box?

This really depends on who you get it from.

Some PVR's come without the software loaded, in this case you need to connect it to PC via a NULL Modem cable and load the software.
If it has the software loaded then you just need to connect it to TV and do a Power Scan.

You'll also need a 4:3 Tv hehe
