I've got two computers in work that are used for the till system which are supposed to be networked together but the problem is neither system can access the other anymore. The network appears to be connected but when trying to access the other machine, a message along the lines of the network is down comes up.

One machine is running on SP2 and the other is on SP1. The machine on SP1 just had Windows reinstalled but was working fine on the network at first but suddenly they just refuse to communicate.

Any ideas?

get both ip address and go to run type in \\(the ip address) and it should see it

Yes there's a router between the two.

I haven't tried a direct crossover yet.

On the machine with sp2, check the firewall in the 'windows security center'. You may find that every connection is blocked.

I had a similar problem with a wireless network. i was advised to try un installing SP2.
As a last resport i did and was able to easily set up the network again.
If all else fails might be worth a try.
