my hard drives going wild

i got a maxtor 320 gig sata hard drive and since i formatted and reinstalled windows xp pro, it wont stop reading/writting.

I downloaded all windows updates, there appears to be nothing running in the backround making it do this.

If i use my machine to play games it seems busier, games are almost impossible to play, it makes it look like i got about 5 fps lol

i checked there was nothin on that wasnt needed in msconfig, i did spyware and virus scan.

can anyone help?

Go to sysinternals site and download Process Explorer and find out what process is causing this. PE tells you all that is going on in the way of processes and is useful to have handy for such issues.

Was it a clean windows xp disc or one of those blue/black/silver/rainbow/etc edition ones that you can download?
