can someone please advise if it is possible to start the page numbering on another page other than the front... basically i donht want page numbering on the title, abstract , acknowledgements or index..

here you go

this is what we used at uni for section numbering

when you set your bullet points for the headings start at zero and then start your page numbers at 1 each time.

dont do any numbering till you get to the last part of the last page you dont want numbers on.

then clicko n insert > break > section break (next page)

then go to the header / footer of the new page, click on "link to previous" in the toolbar to unlink either from the previous section. then you can start your numbering
