mac scanning

hi something im not sure about could i say go to my mothers house that is about 5 miles away and scan for macs and then come home and put it in my modem at home ??? as this is my first atempt at a modem and im not sure what gateway meains ?

yes thats sort of what i do!
i goto my m8s house 5 miles away and use his pc to scan from.
the ones i find work fine on my pc.
