Loading openWRT onto the vmdg480 (CG3103D)

Have just got hold of a VMDG480 cable modem and after looking at the software on the device i am disappointed really at how few functions are on it, i got given it and plan to use it as a 1gbit hub with faster 5ghz wifi and drop my old sky router down to just the modem. The plan is to try and put OpenWRT on the device, have found that it has a UART port on the PCB that should allow me to connect a serial interface (USB) and open the root functions of the router or can i flash this device via the ethernet port
