Laptop Locked????????????

My brother has given me his old laptop, the problem is that he cant remember the password to get into it?

Is there anyway or thing that I can do to recover the old password without deleting any of his files.
i promise this is all above board, he has been using his works laptop for the pass 8 months, and left this one in his cupboard.

It wont even let me run in safe mode, so is there any software I can download onto a bootup disk ect to run or retreive his password.

boot up in safe mode and remove the password..........

download a copy of ERD Commander and you can boot from the cd and use the locksmith utility to change the password
theres also password tools on Hirens Boot CD
