laptop help

hi can anyone help i have just brought a second hand laptop and cant get past the administrators password is there anyway i can overwrite this or completely wipe the hard drive so i can start again any help is much appreciated. tia: thanks :

I assume your referring to the XP logon screen? It only shows the Administrator account? You don't know the password? Have you tried no password? just press enter?
Probably best if you wipe it and do a clean install of XP yourself. Has the m/c got a CD/DVD drive? If so go into the BIOS, set that as the first boot device, pop in the XP disc and follow the on-screen instructions.....

Have fun

if the password is bios set remove the battery for a couple ov hours untill it losses its memary stick battery back in and just load defaults it worked for me

Here's some BIOS utilities that might help you:

Bios Agent v3.45

The BIOS Agent is a simple, easy to use program that will automatically identify your computers BIOS and other system information.

You'll quickly identify:

BIOS Date
Motherboard OEM data
CPU data
BIOS Type
Motherboard Chipset
BIOS ROM data
BIOS ID String
Super I/O data
Memory data

New in v3.45:

CPU Type and Speed
BIOS ROM Socket and Size
Memory Configuration

This information is very helpful in the event you need or want to upgrade the BIOS and other components on your PC. The BIOS Agent program is totally harmless, will not damage your system in any way, and no hidden information about your system is submitted to a database without your prior knowledge first. It is simply a tool which you can use to obtain useful information about your system.

Magic Bios v2.0

Ever wanted to know if your motherboard BIOS was in need of an update, then you need this little utility! Install, make sure you are already on the Internet and start the application. It will search either ASIA, EUROPE OR USA for an update (you select).
It will then tell you if you need an update or not, which it will download for you. These are two versions here and I prefer Version 1.6, so see which you like.
Make sure your firewall(s) are down for a little while when you are attempting to do this.......!!

BIOS Patcher v4.00 RC 7.1

BIOS Patcher can find and fix errors in your system BIOS (only AWARD BIOS for now) and also it can add or open new features, i.e. some features that your BIOS has but they are closed by manufacturer of your motherboard. It scans rom file. If it finds any known errors it fixes the errors. If it finds any closed features it opens it.

Bios v1.35.1

The program displays information about your BIOS, including BIOS extensions and beep codes; lets you find the BIOS passwords (Award and Ami); and discover the Award BIOS universal passwords.

BIOS Information Tool v1.1

Ultimate bios information tool (win32 console application)

CmosPwd v4.6

CmosPwd is a CMOS BIOS password recovery tool.

The latest version works and compiles under Dos-Win9x, Windows NT, Linux and FreeBSD.

Note: This tool should only be used by experienced computer users. Please see the enclosed read_me if you would like to run it from Windows. Failure to follow instructions (from Windows) will cause your anti-virus to flag this as a virus.

bios passwords on laptops are quite a pain...what model is it? if you let us know this you can try some backdoor passwords, but they still may not work. If removing the battery doesn;t work or the backdoor passwords don;t then the last resort would be to contact the manufacturer as they always have a way to reset the bios password.

If its a phoenix bios - try PHOENIX, or phoenix etc etc...

LEt us know how you get on.

also forgot to mention sometimes it can take several hour to clear as the must old charge for so long best bet remove battery (normaly can get to it if you remove keyboard)and leave it out all night

There is a little utility called KillCmos that will will wipe your Cmos ( Bios ) including any passwords, you just have to reset any hardware settings. As LittleJohn says setting everything to default usually works ( on a laptop ). It can be downloaded from here

h**p://www.majorgeeks.com/KillCMOS_d2969.html

*Special Note: KillCMOS will be detected by most anti-virus software as containing a virus, since KillCMOS's primary function is exactly like a virus. Please note that the file is completely safe and Contains NO VIRUS!!!

Also there is a good article and some good info on Hacking your Bios Pasword here

As for Widows 2000

To Reset a User's Password
If a user account needs to be reset, logon as the administrator or as a user with administrative access, and then follow these steps: 1. Click Start, point to Programs, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
2. Expand the Local Users And Groups object under System Tools, and then click the Users folder.
3. In the right pane, right-click the appropriate user object, and then click Set Password.
4. Type the appropriate password, and then click OK.
5. Click OK to acknowledge that the password change succeeded.
6. Close the Computer Management console and Administrative Tools windows.
7. The user can log on with the new password.

To Reset the Administrator's Password
Log on to the computer as a user with administrative privileges, and perform the steps listed above for the Administrator account.

If the Administrator password needs to be reset, and there are no other users with administrative access, there is no way to recover the password and the operating system will need to be reinstalled.

I did read somewhere that if you load windows in safe mode then you can remove the SAM file which contains the password but I have not seen this done so I'm not sure if it will work

Also here is some password recovery software that may help. I haven't tried any of it so be cautious

Hope this helps.
