Laptop Connection

Not too sure if this is a Dbox or pc question but im sure one of you will have a solution, I have purchased a Sony Viao laptop with no serial port. I went out today and bought a USB - Serial connector, however i cannot get the connection via FTP, Pleas help!

If you are using an ftp programme to transfer files all you need is a crossover cable connected to your lan port on laptop.
Set your network card to the same range as dbox and connect using root and dbox as login and password.
