hi folks need some help kids are watching youtube on there pc can someone tell me how to stop them watching p--n etc. as i cannot seem to block it out on there site done it with google search and internet browser but when you goto youtube you can still see video's and xplicit things i dont mind them watching stunts and mad stuff like that it's just the old s-x side of things

As long as they're not signed in m8 usually you're not allowed to view those sorts of videos unless your logged in

i dont have a account for you tube niether do they you can just see them openly

There's isn't porn on youtube is there? The most you'll see is girls in bikinis, and you see worse than that in shampoo adverts these days.

Anyway, there is no way to block individual videos on youtube.

add these to your host file and see if that helps

127.0.0.1 208.65.153.251
127.0.0.1 www.youtube.com
127.0.0.1 youtube.com

if you unsure about host file

check here
h*tp://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

but this would block it completely

That will block youtube completely, not what OP asked.

In answer to the original question. certain areas of youtube are blocked unless you have an account. however it relies on other viewers having previously flagged it and there is plenty of 'porn' and nudity which has not been flagged.

Not that I have been looking specifically there is plenty of topless stuff (mainly in non-English posts). Also simulated porn with some very suggestive stuff.

the ip address is http://208.65.153.251/ for youtube, would it work adding it in his host file?

You best add the following to your blocked list then

Do you really expect that kind of thing to work ?

Kids as young as five know a hell of a lot more about PC's than most of their parents so site blocking is only going to deter them for a short amount of time. If you consider internet content to be a problem for your kids then there is really only one solution - dont let your kids use the internet unsupervised !

Theres no porn on utube u mean xtube lol

I always browse utube for the top ten hits i have never seen any porn on there this is a first for me :proud:

There is a difference between not trusting your kids and protecting them from inadvertently coming across unsuitable material.

I see things like content filtering as part of a range of measures that parents should be using including education and monitoring.

Its not really a matter of trust - Kids are simply curious about anything and everything. Once their curiosity is aroused about something a large number (and increasing) of six or seven year olds are savvy enough to be able to use search engines to satisy that curiosity. Its just one of the consequences of having so much information available at the touch of a button.

Content filtering etc, I feel is basically a waste of time. It makes money for the company selling it and may lull a parent into thinking they have done something. In reality kids can usually find ways around it in minutes if they are so inclined. I used to occasionally teach maths & computing to kids of various ages ranging from 7 to 15 and its suprising what they can do. It wasn't uncommon for even the younger ones to be trading methods to circumvent any form of filtering they came up against. Eight year olds could eaily configure virtual private networks and proxies in order to get what they wanted whilst ten year olds were more than capable of making their own bootable linux disks so they could boot the pc's into a system that had no controls whatsoever.

So, dont be fooled into thinking kids are protected just because you've put a filter in place. Chances are that the kids will get around that filter in less time than it took you to configure it. If you are worried then there is no substitution for allowing internet access only when supervised.

As a general principle, I would NEVER allow any child under the age of ten to have an internet connected PC in any private space (bedroom etc). I would always make sure they use a PC in a family room and usually only if an adult is also in the room.

btw, Kids under 10 are actually rarely interested in porn. If they do come across it then it rarely holds their interest for more than a few minutes before they move on to something more interesting like trying to download the latest music, video or game. Most of them consider porn to be quite "yukky" !
