Premier League footballer Joey Barton has been jailed for assault and affray.

Barton, 25, was arrested in Liverpool on 27 December 2007 after he was involved in a confrontation outside a McDonald's restaurant in the city.

The Newcastle and England midfielder, from Widnes, admitted the charges last month but reporting restrictions were only lifted on Tuesday.

Sentencing him to six months in jail, Judge Henry Globe QC said it was a "violent and cowardly act".

His club said in a statement: "Newcastle United notes the sentence passed to Joey Barton at Liverpool Crown Court today.

"The club is considering the verdict and will be making no further comment at this moment."

Barton, originally from Huyton, Merseyside, began his football career with Manchester City in 2002.

He was sold by them to Newcastle United in June 2007 in a £5.8m deal, four months after he had made his full international debut for England

BBC Says the Club aren't going to comment on the next case.

Barton to be sentenced for attack

Premier League footballer Joey Barton is to be sentenced later for attacking a team-mate on the training ground.

The 25-year-old midfielder, now with Newcastle United, repeatedly punched Ousmane Dabo who was on the floor.

At Manchester Minshull Crown Court Barton admitted a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm when both were Manchester City players.

He is currently serving a six-month jail term for an attack while on bail in which he punched a man in Liverpool.

Barton, born in Liverpool, was sold by Manchester City to Newcastle United in a £5.8m deal last summer, signing a five-year contract.

His club has said it will not be commenting on the case.

'Explosive' violence

Barton admitted the May 2007 assault on Dabo when he appeared in court on Monday.

Richard Vardon, prosecuting, described the incident at City's Carrington training ground as an "explosive combination of football and violence".

The two players apparently rowed on the training pitch and Dabo, 31, pushed Barton away as he swore at him.

Barton retaliated punching him in the head and causing Dabo to lose consciousness.

Witnesses were due to give evidence saying they saw Barton continue to punch his team-mate as he lay dazed on the ground.

It is the third time Barton has been in court during 2008.

In May he was jailed for the Liverpool attack which was caught on CCTV.

Later that month he was cleared of vandalising a taxi on a night out in Merseyside.

Just in-case anybody hasn't seen it....

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ul5uVWDexRo"]Warning: CCTV of footballer Joey Barton in violent attack[/ame]

Didn't get long enough if you as me....

If he was jailed at Liverpool Crown Court, doesnt that mean he goes to that holiday camp at Preston. (not sure of its name, Kirk something). He will no doubt get the same treatment Prince Hameed got when he broke the law, how good the rich and famous get life both sides of the fence

He got off with it ??

Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton has been spared another jail term over his assault of Ousmane Dabo after pleading guilty to the charge.

Barton punched his former Manchester City team-mate in a training ground row, leaving him unconscious and covered in blood on the ground.

The 25-year-old was due to go on trial at Manchester Minshull Crown Court on Monday, but changed his plea shortly before the scheduled start.

He has now been given a four-month suspended sentence and ordered to carry out community service.

Judge Mushtaq Khokhar told Barton: "As a professional footballer you are someone who is talented and greatly idolised by young and old alike whether you are playing at Manchester City and now at Newcastle United.

"You are constantly in the public eye. You have a high profile, there would be instances of provocations ... being an idol brings with it responsibilities which you have to carry with you all the time.

Example

"You want to be setting an example, particularly to those who idolise you, particularly youngsters who look up to you."

Barton was suspended by City after the incident and joined Newcastle for £5.8million last summer, but he continued to make headlines away from the pitch.

He is currently serving a six-month jail term which began on 20th May after pleading guilty to charges of assault and affray over an incident at a McDonald's in Liverpool city centre on 27th December.

Newcastle have now confirmed they will speak to Barton over his future.

They said in a statement: "The club now intends to hold discussions with Joey and his representatives at the earliest possible opportunity."
