The first post-operative picture of the Frenchwoman given a face transplant has been published in The Daily Telegraph.

Thirty-eight-year-old divorcee Isabelle Dinoire is the first person in the world to have undergone the operation.

She had her chin, lips and part of her nose replaced after being mauled by her pet labrador in May.

The French surgeon who led the 15-hour operation, in the northern city of Amiens, said it would take around six months for feeling to return to Mrs Dinoire's face.

Bernard Devauchelle said his patient, who wants her identity kept secret, had regained consciousness 24 hours after the operation, on Sunday.

"There were no post-surgical problems," he told a news conference.

He also revealed that her first words were "thank you" and that she had since been able to eat strawberries and chocolate.

The donor of Mrs Dinoire's new face was a brain-dead patient whose family gave their consent.
