Iran has begun loading fuel into its first nuclear power station in a ceremony attended by Russian officials.

Russia will operate the Bushehr plant in southern Iran, supplying its nuclear fuel and taking away the nuclear waste.

Iran has been subject to four rounds of UN sanctions because of its separate, uranium enrichment programme.

Experts say that as long as the plant is Russian-operated, there is little immediate threat of its fuel being diverted to make bombs.

The West fears Tehran wants to build a nuclear weapon, but Iran insists its plans are for peaceful energy production.

The Bushehr facility has taken 35 years to build and has been plagued by delays.

"Despite all pressure, sanctions and hardships imposed by western nations, we are now witnessing the startup of the largest symbol of Iran's peaceful nuclear activities," Iranian nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi told journalists at the plant.

The BBC's Jon Leyne says Iranian officials have promoted Saturday's launch as a victory for the Islamic republic against its enemies. Nationwide celebrations are planned to mark the event.

But Professor Ali Ansari, an Iran expert at the University of St Andrews, in Scotland, said Tehran was likely to exaggerate the importance of the start-up at Bushehr.

"It will obviously have a very theatrical opening but the delays have meant that the power plant is a very old model and the contribution to the national grid is very small," he said.
'Russian-US deal'

The Bushehr plant should begin producing electricity in about a month, experts say.

It is not seen by analysts as posing a significant proliferation risk.

The uranium fuel it will use is well below the enrichment level needed for a nuclear weapon. Weapons-grade uranium must be enriched by more than 90%. In contrast, the uranium at Bushehr is enriched by 3.5%.

The Bushehr fuel has been supplied by Russia, although Iran is already producing its own uranium enriched to fuel grade.

It has also begun a pilot program to enrich uranium to 20% which it says is needed for a medical research reactor.

It is that programme that has alarmed the West and Israel.

Reports in Washington suggested that the US lifted its objections to the completion of the plant at Bushehr as the price for Russia's vote in the latest round of sanctions against Iran.

Western officials have been changing their tune recently, our correspondent says, describing Bushehr as an example of the peaceful benefits of nuclear energy, to which Iran is entitled.

In a defiant statement on Friday, the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation Ali Akbar Salehi said the country would continue uranium enrichment, the official Iranian news agency IRNA reported.

Referring to the Bushehr plant, he said: "Suppose we receive the required nuclear fuel for the plant from the Russians for the next 10 years, what are we going to do for the next 30 to 50 years?"

He said Iran could produce up to 30 tons of enriched uranium at its Natanz plant once the necessary centrifuges are installed at the site.

This is the USA's chance to neukem and blame it on faulty workmanship on the reactor. lol

Or better still for them to Nuke USA and say they had information that USA had weapons of mass destruciton.

But as the US has little in the way of Oil and Gold, probably not a worthwhile exercise.

You may be surprised to know that the US has more untapped oil than the whole of the Middle East but...sshhhh,keep it quiet!

Bloody hell no one better tell the Iranians then, as that'll be the excuse they need. Hopefully we dont have any members in Iran following this thread, else you just outed the US mate. lmao

What gives the US the right to think that only they should have the means to kill the rest of the world.

That is true but, i'd rather not have some dictator with total power over a nuclear bomb have hold of one.

Only one country has used a nuclear weapon - twice - and it wasn't a dictatorship.

But that was good against evil

I used to be under the false impression that the 2 bombs were dropped near enough simultaniously and if that was true then fair enough but it turned out they were days if not longer appart. I think the second was out of order after they saw what the first did.

6th august 1945 and 9th august 1945

BBC - WW2 People's War - Timeline

On the morning of 6 August 1945 an American B-29 bomber, the 'Enola Gay', dropped the first atomic bomb used in warfare on the Japanese city of Hiroshima.

The bomb was dropped by parachute and exploded 580m (1,900ft) above the ground. Between 60,000 and 80,000 people were killed instantly. The heat from the bomb was so intense that some people simply vanished in the explosion. Many more died of the long-term effects of radiation sickness. The final death toll was calculated at 135,000. As well as residents of Hiroshima, the victims included Koreans who had been forced to come to Japan as labourers, and American prisoners-of-war who were imprisoned in Hiroshima.

The blast destroyed more than ten square kilometres (six square miles) of the city. And the intense heat of the explosion then created many fires, which consumed Hiroshima and lasted for three days, trapping and killing many of the survivors of the initial blast. Thousands of people were made homeless and fled the devastated city.

Hiroshima was chosen because it had not been targeted during the US Air Force's conventional bombing raids on Japan, and was therefore regarded as being a suitable place to test the effects of an atomic bomb. It was also an important military base. The Allies feared that any conventional attempt to invade the Japanese home islands would result in enormous casualties, and the bomb was seen as a way of bringing the war against Japan to a swift conclusion. In addition, it may also have been a way of demonstrating American military superiority over the Soviet Union.

On the morning of 9 August, the Americans dropped a second, bigger atomic bomb. The original target was Kokura, but this was obscured by cloud so the bomb was dropped on nearby Nagasaki, an important port. About 40,000 people were killed instantly and a third of the city was destroyed. The final death toll was calculated as at least 50,000.

Among those in the plane that dropped the bomb on Nagasaki was the British pilot Leonard Cheshire. He later recalled the cloud caused by the atomic blast in Martin Gilbert's Second World War:

'Obscene in its greedy clawing at the earth, swelling as if with its regurgitation of all the life that it had consumed.'

On 14 August, Japan agreed to the Allies' terms of surrender. At midday on the following day, Emperor Hirohito broadcast the news to the Japanese people. It was the first time his voice had been heard on the radio.

After the war, Hiroshima was rebuilt as a peace memorial city and the closest surviving building to the epicentre was designated the Hiroshima Peace Memorial.

Look back through history and the American government has caused the deaths of more people than all the terrorist put together.

I am of course referring to the young soldiers sent to lay down their life for the so called good peaceful nation.

Well you should be thanking them for dropping the second, a simple thank you would suffice you ungrateful little boy.
You need to go talk to the veterans who fought against the Japs.

A pun perhaps?

I'm not an ungratefull little boy at all (what the **** do you mean by that?)

All i was saying was, after killing 100,000 inoccent people, they could have given them a chance to surrender before doing the same.

99% of the people that the bombs killed or injured were innocent women and children, old men and women and people who actually didnt take part in any fighting at all.

Those that the bombs didnt kill had their homeland ruined by radiation, their families devistated, families that are still affected now.

So if you think that dropping an atomic bomb, or any bomb, is a good thing then I think you need to reconsider your place in society.

You seem to know nothing about the history of the last war, if you did you would not be talking nonsense

What would you have wanted?, give the Japs the bomb? or the Germans, if that was the case you would not be sitting where you are running the Americans down.
You would be talking German bowing to every Oriental looking person who walked past

No, not at all, but if you are going to drop a bomb like that, at least drop it on their front line soldiers, not civillians.
