Sorry for the dumb question but does this zip file need to be renamed to .ipk in order to install it via local extension?

This is a update ftp so you need IPTVPlayer installed then ftp this update over to the same directory.

OK, I've used iptvplayer_2017.09.28.01_all to initially install this, then I'm guessing I have to ftp the unpacked zip file IPTVplayer 2017.10.08 2017-10-09. over into the same directory?

Thats correct yes.

Did all the above and on rebooting I got this error message: some plugins are not available, Extensions/IPTVPlayer (No Module Named htmlentitydefs). I searched the internet and came across a few instances of this with the suggested fix being to telnet to the box
"wget http://iptvplayer.pl/iptvinstaller.sh -O - | /bin/sh"
Having done this it has now fixed the error, just thought I'd mention this in case any others out there are having the same issues.
I'll also try and re-copy Ferrets modified IPTVplayer later, as I suspect the telnet command could have overwritten his.
The box in question is a (VU+ Solo SE v2, running Open PLi 4)
