Cities across India were placed on high alert yesterday with the army called out to patrol "sensitive areas" after a wave of bombings left 46 people dead in two days.

More than 16 bombs exploded in the west Indian city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat on Saturday, killing 45 people and leaving 161 wounded. A day earlier a string of bombs exploded in Bangalore, India's hi-tech capital, killing one woman.

Police found two unexploded devices in Ahmedabad and also defused two bombs in Surat in Gujarat yesterday. More than 30 people were rounded up in a series of raids, ahead of a visit to the scene of the blasts by the Indian prime minister today.

The bombings in Ahmedabad centred on two distinct areas. The first series of devices exploded in crowded market places in the old part of the city, which is home to a large Muslim community.

The second string of blasts, which went off 20 minutes later, targeted a hospital - killing six people, including doctors. Television news showed pictures of victims writhing in pain and covered in blood on hospital floors. Some witnesses said the blast was powerful enough to throw a car into the air. "All I saw was a Maruti [hatchback car] flying up in the air and landing with a thud," Pavan Purohit told the Indian Express.

A group known as "Indian Mujahideen", seemingly dedicated to fomenting violence between India's Hindu majority and Muslim minority, claimed responsibility for the Ahmedabad attack. The same group said it carried out bomb attacks that killed 63 people in the western city of Jaipur in May.

Like the Jaipur attacks, most of the devices were crude, police in Gujarat said. Many of the bombs were packed into metal tiffin boxes, used to carry food, and stuffed with ball-bearings. Some were left on bicycles.

Gujarat's state government ordered the closure of all shops, cinemas and markets. Ahmedabad is the main city in Gujarat, scene of riots in 2002 in which 2,500 people are thought to have died, most of them Muslims killed by Hindu mobs.

The state's chief minister, Narendra Modi, is seen as a rising leader in the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata party but was also accused of turning a blind eye to the violence against Muslims.

In an email purportedly sent by the Indian Mujahideen following the Jaipur blasts, Modi was mentioned as giving "orders to kill Muslims".

Violence, the email read, is a means "to clearly give our message to Kaffir-e-Hind [the infidels of India] that if Islam and Muslims in this country are not safe then the light of your safety will also go off very soon".

Please do not post any flaming remarks about religion.

The point I found interesting here is that Narendra Modi is calling for mob violence and revenge against muslims in the area. We all know what happened in 2002 after similar comments were made by the BJP.

What I don't understand about these bombings is that as a direct result of the mujahideen's bombings innocent muslims will be slaughtered by hindu mobs in revenge attacks that have been called for by a prominent hindu politician. This would never have happended 10 years ago.

I think things are going to get much worse in India before they get better.

Also I find it quite astonishing that a prominent politician would speak his mind in a politically correct world when the international community is watching. This would never happen in the UK. We may see divisions within Indian politics with the far right gaining popularity amid these constant attacks. Maybe this is a parallel to the BNP gaining popularity but on a much larger scale.

The only people that will suffer are ordinary civilians who just want to live a peaceful life.

I would want corroboration on what Modi said Munkey.

I agree this does not need to turn into another stupid thread.

But, do you not think that 'Radical' islamists need to be killed, before they kill?

I have no problem with killing suicide bombers/car bombers etc before they get to kill.

The Indian Mujahideen will kill anybody to cause chaos. That's what they are after. The next caliphate will only exist if the entire world is in a state of upheaval. They see their supposed 'own', fellow Muslims, as Kaffir lovers anyway.

It's all so sad.

The interesting point here is that Hindu's are finally starting to stand up for themselves after hundreds of years of being on the defensive. Recently (in the past few years) there has been a huge change in attitude in normal people on the street but especially with politicians speaking out against the communities from where these bombers come from.

What used to happen was some radicals would commit an atrocity and the Hindu's would take it lying down saying oh well it was the radicals that did it and not normal Muslims who are tolerant. We need to clamp down on the radicals, blah blah blah, the type of standardised dialogue that we are used to hearing from countries that suffer from islamic terrorism.

Now things are changing. Politicians are now holding the muslim communities responsible for harbouring these terrorists. This is a huge change in stance from what we have seen for hundreds of years. The radical Hindu politicians want the muslim communities to clamp down on this internally or they will take their revenge on the community as a whole. Whilst this tactic is unfair on those that are not involved (the majority) it is seen as one of the only ways in which this type of terrorism can be beat. The islamic community must take some responsibility for the atrocities that their fellow Muslims are committing.

Times are changing, the passive Hindu movements of old are being replaced by right wing Hindu movements who have a zero tolerance attitude. These Hindu nationalists are fed up with leading Islamic religious leaders negating their communities involvement in the bombings.

Other western countries are far too PC to even consider trying new tactics. Its very difficult to start blaming the muslim community for harbouring these terrorists but these bombings are not stopping.

Some of the right wing dialogue coming out from these parties is very dangerous. Some hard liners want all muslims to get out of India as they see this as the only way of completely stopping terrorism. This type of dialogue will only gain in popularity as the body counts of innocent people continues to rise.

Thank god the US is finally considering taking action against the militants based in western Pakistan. India has been fighting this war on terror long before 9/11. I just wonder what type of military action it will be? Bush is in his last year so he may do more than just launch a few cruise missiles, possibly an air offensive on the border regions.

Of course it wont happen, the statements are made to provoke the people into reacting instead of just lying down whilst the death toll continues to rise.

Only when the muslim community put pressure on the terrorists to stop what they are doing will there be any progress.

Two words for you, Northern Ireland. Never worked there for either side.

"Dissident Irish republicans are more active than any other terrorist group in the UK, according to the latest British intelligence service surveillance.

MI5 data indicates that organisations such as the Real IRA and the Continuity IRA currently posed a greater danger than Islamic extremists, according to a report in The Guardian newspaper."

That's a good point although slightly different. In India the Hindu's want to live in peace and the radical muslims want to bomb the hell out of everyone that is not muslim. Hindu's have been trying to resolve without violence for centuries and finally are getting pissed off and are ready to fight back.

In N.Ireland both sides wanted to fight from the beginning.

I still agree with you that violence will not work. Unfortunately one side being violent and the other peaceful, doesn't work either so you may as well give violence a chance as you have nothing to lose.

The political and socio economic situations are very different too. India is still a third world country so the laws of the jungle are quite different to a country like N.Ireland.

give violence a chance

Lol. I have that on a t-shirt!

I understand what you are saying Steve, but I believe that the political conciliation that occurred in Northern Ireland would not have happened until the blood was shed. A harsh point I now, but sometimes political dialogue
can only occur when both sides (as Munkey points out) want to talk and compromise. There was a time during the conflict where only violence was possible as each other sides demands were so entrenched that they could not talk.

Sure the British government did some stupid (possibly evil) things, but then again so did the IRA. It was a war. Wars are not perfect.

Getting back onto the radical Muslim problem. People do blame Muslim's for the acts of a few, and that is sad, but again it is an animal instinct, to assign the actions of an individual to the tribe that they loosely belong to.

Now Munkey seems to like the fact that the Hindu population are now standing up to the radical Islamic bully. I tend to agree. These young morons that are radicalised are mainly, or once were, peace loving Muslims. So, when the family/friends/community start to see the signs they should act. Because by not acting they are implicitly allowing an evil act to occur.

I am not anti-Muslim. Most religions have had their dark periods. But now, the Muslim faith is the issue. The fastest growing religion in the world has a cancer that needs to be cut out. If we (peace loving human beings of the world) are going to sort these morons out we need help from our peace loving Muslim friends.

As I said, the phase we are in now is violence. There is a group of people who believe that a new Muslim caliphate needs to be established, and they want to forge chaos through war to make it happen. You cannot sit round a table and chat with a suicide bomber.

The Muslim community needs to start ratting out the bad guys.

There is an easy solution to this, the Pakistani governement can clamp down on the terrorists that cross the borders. Pakistan who promote the violence in secret, do their darn best to unsettle the region. Having Musharaf in control was great for the security of both countries. Now that he is in the background Pakistan have started misbehaving again.

Recently there have been ceasefire violations and violations of airspace, but the Indians seem to be taking it in their stride though as the USA will soon be turning on their Pakistani partners on the war on terror.
