I want to learn C++

I want to learn C++ at a high level. I am on just finishing high school though unfortunately and I can not be taught it, so I will have to teach myself. Does anyone have any advice on this?

The most complicated language I know is PHP. I have done basic visual basic, but in the future I want to do system programming, so I would like to stay away from that if possible.

So what shall I do first? Shall I go straight into buying a book on it or something? Or shall I learn C first?

Any advice would be helpful thanks.

have you thought about trying Delphi?
its fairly similar to VB but a lot more powerful
