how much memory

with 2 512 mb of memory fitted in system properties it shows 960 mb is this right or do i have a problem with my memory

Yeah thats fine, no problems there. It is probably allocating 64mb for an onboard video card.

what does the BIOS report?

graphics are ATI express radeon 200m do i have to boot into BIOS to find that out
