How do i transfer .?

The missus just come across her old ipod mini to my dismay and asked me to put some tracks on it I have on my laptop last time I did it some 6 years ago
So haven't a clue how to now ? Could anyone help with an easy way to do this ?

as far as i remember to put anything music/video on Idevice you need itunes. Or can download on to device but not sure if the built-in players will detect it if it has not been transferred by Itunes.
