how do i play movies from a hard drive connected to a PlayStation 5 please

so i have formatted the external hard drive to exFAT , am i right in thinking the playstation will only play mp4 files ?. or will it play any file i put in the hardrive ? .
Also do i need to add VLC to the external hard drive ?

any help would be appreciated .... thankyou

IDK about the PS5, but the XSX you have to install the movies app to play stuff, but it'll play most formats. MKV/MP4 etc.
