HD tv what's it all about ?

our old ntl pace box bit the dust the other week and we had engineer around and gave us a nice new shiny cisco hd box.

with this in mind i went and bought a hdmi cable and fitted it and went into setup and selected hdmi 1080 etc and a few other things eng said to change and we sat back ready to be amazed.

well it looks a bit like the emperors new clothes to me it doesn't look any different to me or Mrs......we have both started talking to work colleagues, friends and family and of all the people we asked only 1 person said yes its much better than "normal" tv.

is this a big con or have all our friends and family got their tv/box setups wrong ?

Don't mean to sound thick but you have put it on like BBC hd or itv hd when they're actually bowing hd content otherwise you won't see any difference

LOL as per adams post im laughing..

You say you had a pace SD box.. the engineer gave you a HD box because that is all is being installed.. Therefor your package is a standard SD package not HD.

To actually view HD content you will need to have the subscription activated.. you wont get BBCHD, ITVHD, Film4 nor Channel4 HD.

Ring up virgin and gegt the basic hd channels mentioned above activated..

Actually you might see an increase in picture quality if your TV is upscaling standard def pic to HD.

yes have hd channels bbc hd, itv hd, channel 4 hd, film 4 hd. and a few others and checked with virmin that they are in our package and yes according to them the codes are set right for our config to the box.

at the momment bbc1 has local news bbc hd has Dive, as this is a new series i assume its sent out in hd...

TBH I dont see much difference on ITV or BBC. But watch sky sports and you will see a massive difference.

AFAIK unlike ITV HD, all BBC HD programming is filmed in HD. A lot of ITV stuff is upscaled.

Maybe you need to clean your TV, lol

There is massive difference between things like Dr Who in SD and HD, never mind the natural history stuff.

Not so hot on ITV HD coverage TBH hardly every watch it.

I cant see any diference in skysportsHD.. using the same telly with a SkyHD box is a much clearer picture than the Virgin equivilant..

So your saying you cannot see any differance between SD and HD? check all your settings again mate because there should be a very noticeable differance, well there is on my set up anyway.

You must have it plugged in via scart then mate seriously sky sports hd footy is out of this world compared to sd lol

Enter menu..

Display and Audio.

Change Scart to HDMI..
Next row change to 1080i Wide

Press ok and tune into BBCHD..

Dont own a scart lead mate..

as said skysports HD on sky is far superior to virgin ssHD..

just checked the manual for tv and confirmed it says its designed for best performance with 1080 high definition video signal but will accept and display 480i 480p 576i 576p and 720p signals.

just check the box and its set for 1080 wide

if i flick from bbc1 to bbc hd when the same program is on they really don't look any different at all.

@oneman when is Dr. Who on is it still sat ? ill try and catch that and flick around and see if it makes any difference.

I very rarely watch BBC HD as nothing is usually on the same times as normal BBC. Although I will admit that Dr Who in HD is much better than SD.

Sounds like something wrong with the box then. I use Sky HD and its crisp on the football and other stuff. You can see the difference in the pitch and everything else.

I'm using a Vu+duo sat box and when i'm streaming the tv to my pc the picture is outstanding.
Not so noticeable on the tv though

@jackel yep did that last week when i got hdmi cable and fitted, as i was so underwhelmed just to be sure i removed scart cable that goes to dvd recorder just in case it was somehow stopping hdmi from working.
