Other hard drive

I took hard drive out of a working computer,put it in a caddy and it powers up fine,can feel the disc turning etc.
The new pooter is on windows 8.1 and it doesnt even show up, tried the hard drive out of laptop and same thing,no show.tried it on the laptop and same results.
will try it on another pooter soon but any ideas out there.

Just to clarify the hard drive doesn't work on Win8 PC or Laptop.
And Laptop hard drive doesn't work in Win8 PC but does work in the laptop ?

Got one h d from old lappy and one hd from old pc. Both worked when fitted to old machines but when in caddy neither worked. Tested caddy with each hd in on new win 8 pc and a working laptop. Caddy /hd not being seen by either. Both have hd have the old operating system still on.

Sounds like a faulty caddy. Is it a powered caddy or should it be powered?

just exchanged caddy at shop so will be testing it soon.
ok it seems it was the caddy, just formatting the drive now so seems ok upto now.
