Four clubs wait for Gretna fate

Four clubs are waiting in the wings to apply for membership to the Scottish Football League should Gretna go bust.

Gretna's future could become clearer on Monday, but Spartans, Annan Athletic, Preston Athletic and Cove Rangers are all preparing applications.

Spartans may be in pole position with a new SFL-compliant stadium nearly ready.

The club's general manager, Derick Rodier, said: "Our long-term aim was always to get in to the SFL, but we are not counting any chickens."

Gretna could be wound up next week after SFL chief executive David Longmuir found "fundamental flaws" in the business plan put forward by the sole interested party.

Rodier admitted preparations were "tentative" but believes the stadium, along with astroturf training facilities, gives them an edge.

"We have a new 500-seater stand and concrete terracing right round the ground"
Annan secretary Alan Irving

East of Scotland League rivals Annan have also notified the league of their interest in replacing neighbours Gretna.

Annan have begun to upgrade of their Galabank ground after Peterhead and Elgin beat them to the two extra places on offer in 2000.

Club secretary Alan Irving said: "We have a new 500-seater stand and concrete terracing right round the ground.

"The only stumbling block might be the floodlights, but we had planned do see to them this calendar year."

Highland League champions Cove Rangers appear to be the only club from the north preparing a bid.

And Preston Athletic, whose applications were rejected by the SFL in 2000 and 2002, when Gretna were admitted, also intend to apply.

They have been in discussions with East Lothian Council over moving to a new stadium and forming a new club that would capitalise on the area's lack of top-level football.

SFL chief Longmuir has set a deadline of early next week for a Gretna takeover to be completed.

would the three teams mentioned last much longer I doubt it. The only reason Gretna were in the crap was due to the rapid expansion into the SPL. I think you will find the other teams vying to get in will remain stocking fillers and will never achieve SPL status.

Gretna's struggle in final stages

Gretna FC could be wound up in the next 48 hours as a deadline for takeover bids for the club approaches.

The Scottish Football League relegated the club to division three last week after it found "fundamental flaws" in the sole offer for the side.

It set a deadline of early this week for a takeover of the club which went into administration in March.

Gretna chairman Ron MacGregor said he was still "hoping to hear" from someone who might take the club on.

An official at insolvency firm Wilson Field said a statement on Gretna's future would probably be issued on Tuesday.

A number of clubs have already expressed an interest in taking their place in division three.

'Very valuable'

Spartans, Annan Athletic, Preston Athletic and Cove Rangers are all preparing applications for their spot.

However, Mr MacGregor said he believed the club could still have a future.

"I think the place in the SFL is still very valuable and we are just hoping to hear from someone who might look at taking the club on," he said.

"We are working under the administrator and we just hope he can hang on for someone to very quickly come in and take it on."

Gretna 'no longer in existence'

Administrators at Gretna FC have said they feel the Raydale Park side has ceased to exist as a football club.

The only interested party in taking over the team has withdrawn its offer.

David Elliot from administrators Wilson Field said he expected the Scottish Football League to expel the side within a "matter of days".

He has concluded that the club could not continue as a business and would be unable to guarantee it could complete league fixtures next year.

Gretna went into administration in March this year with debts of about £4m after backer Brooks Mileson withdrew his support.

Last week the SFL relegated the club to Division Three.

Mr Elliot said he would now look to market the Raydale Park ground "outside football".

"I had one offer on the table which I decided at that late stage I would pursue," he explained.

"The prospective purchaser had produced a business plan based on First Division football and so he has formally withdrawn his offer.

"Effectively we are still technically in the Third Division but I can't complete fixtures next season."

He said he had informed the SFL of that situation and expected them to expel the club soon.

Financial mess

"The problem with this club is it started off in 1946 with a group of ex-servicemen coming back from World War Two setting up a village football team," said Mr Elliot.

"Then a few years ago Mr Mileson took over and injected a lot of money into the club and it enjoyed a lot of success on the football pitch.

"But if you take away the benefactor - the person supplying the money - then financially you have a real mess."

A number of clubs have already expressed an interest in taking their place in Division Three.

Spartans, Annan Athletic, Preston Athletic and Cove Rangers are all preparing applications for their spot.

Gretna relinquish league status

Gretna have lost their battle for survival and resigned from the Scottish Football League.

The administrator running the troubled club concluded that Gretna could not continue running as a business.

Gretna only entered the SFL structure in 2002 and completed an astonishing rise to the Premier League in 2007.

However, the club ran into financial problems when benefactor Brooks Mileson withdrew his support and they were relegated from the top flight.

Gretna went into administration in March with debts totalling about £4m.

They were immediately penalised 10 points by the SPL and 22 players were made redundant, ensuring the already struggling team would be relegated.

The administrator called in was only able to see Gretna through to the end of the season after an advance of prize money from the SPL.

With doubts over the club's ability to fulfil fixtures next season, the SFL took the decision to drop Gretna down to Division Three.

But the one previously interested party withdrew their offer to purchase the club and Gretna are now out of business altogether.

An SFL spokesman said: "I have received intimation from the Gretna FC administrator of their resignation from the Scottish Football League with immediate effect.

"I have accepted this resignation on behalf of the Scottish Football League and accordingly, we now have a vacancy in the Third Division and are seeking applications."

The SFL have set a deadline of 12 June for prospective new clubs to apply for membership.

The SFL Management Committee will then visit each applicant club by 27 June.

Applicant clubs will then be invited, following assessment, to present their business and football plans to all 29 members of the SFL at a Special General Meeting to be held at Hampden Park on 3 July.

The 29 SFL clubs will then vote on the day to decide which club has been invited to join the SFL as a Third Division club with effect from the 2008-09 season.

Spartans, Annan Athletic, Preston Athletic and Cove Rangers are all preparing applications.
