Can someone recommend a good cheap first camera?

What are you going to be photographing?

If it's just random stuff, i'm sure any cheapish phone will do the job?

i would buy a good secondhand DSLR with len's and learn to use it, go for the mid range as you will get more use from it, once you are compleatly addicted you can spend 1000s on getting the perfect setup.

the only question is nikon? or cannon?

I've got a DSLR with a Zoom lens that cost as much as the camera did. It's good and takes super shots but...........
If you want a little rocket in your pocket then this - Buy Canon PowerShot SX620 HS 20MP 25x Zoom Camera Bundle - Red | Superzoom cameras | Argos and get one of them mini bendy tripods as the zoom is very good. Got mine a couple of years back, very handy bit of kit.
Oh need to add it's the optical zoom that keeps the quality...........
