Hdmi ports are hot pluggable but it's the same old case that you only get what you pay for. The manufacturer can use cheap or quality hdmi sockets or plugs in their equipment. After a short time or many insertions, the cheap one doesn't fit so well and the hdmi plug's ground pins may not insert first resulting in a blown hdmi chip or corrupt firmware.
I found most times I could just rewrite the hdmi firmware to get the tv operational again.
