If it's still possible to open the file, copy past tab by tab the content to a new file and save it under a different name.
If the file doesn't want to open, you can still try to link to the file from within an other excel file
Third possibility is to open the file as a database via ado and access the data tab by tab

cant open it in excel, even tried open office .. however the ado thing may be useful as I do write apps in VB so could use that method

Long shot @jfish but if it isn't too complicated save a blank workbook and then try a hex editor after doing a file difference.

I reverse engineered Word documents so I could write them using a PHP script ages ago. Might be difficult with Excel but I'd try if it was important.
