A woman was caught drink-driving after a distressed child was seen banging on the window of a car while shouting "stop mummy driving".

Police said the vehicle carrying the five-year-old girl eventually stopped after crossing the road and hitting a fence in Falkirk town centre on Sunday afternoon.

The 35-year-old driver was more than four and a half times over the drink drive limit and admitted drink driving and putting the child at risk when she appeared in court.

Members of the public pulled the child out of the car following the incident, and police said pedestrians were alerted by the girl banging on the window while the car was being driven eratically.

A police spokesman said: "A member of the public saw this and one woman tried to get the driver to stop the car. The car finally came to a stop after crossing over the road, hitting a fence and then a wall.

"The driver reversed and stopped. The child was removed from the car by a member of the public."

Assistant Chief Constable Jim Green, of the Association of Chief Police Officers area, said that in 29 years of policing he had never heard of incident in which such a young child had alerted members of the public "to a parent's totally unacceptable and inexcusable behaviour".

He added: "While the court will address the driving consequences of this woman's behaviour, it is the underlying issues that have to be addressed by all our partners who are concerned with this driver and many other motorists' well-being as well as that of the general and motoring public."

The incident happened during the second week of a summer drink-driving safety campaign.

Falkirk sheriff court heard that the driver was an alcoholic who was seeking help and had no memory of the incident.

She was released on bail and sentence was deferred until next month for background reports.

Fekkin hell...thats unthinkable that is. How could anyone put there child at risk like that, four and a half times over the limit and took her child for a wee drive.

They need to lock that bitch up, she is an unfit mother and a drunk, next time she may just kill them both.

take the kid away from her, put it with family or a decent foster carer, if she is any sort of mum that should straiten her out.

it amazes me that the 5 year old kid knew what she was doing was wrong and the mother thought nothing of it.

Kid should be taken from her as she put her life at risk, but it the kid that will suffer being shuffled here there and everywhere if thay cant find a perm foster parents or that. in and out of care for that matter poor wee soul.
