The power supply on my 500S seems to have died.
It says the output is 12v and 2A.
I have a good few adapters around the house.
One is 12V,300ma the other is 12V,500ma .
They both fit the connector on the back of the box nicely.Seem to work fine, box is working ok.
Can I use one of these long term on a fixed dish ,is it safe ?

I have used a 12v 500ma for a couple of months with no ill effects, so i would say you should be ok m8.

When my died (they are crud aren't they) I used one from my old netgear modem.

It's a 12v 1a.So if you have an old modem have a check of the psu.

I've been using one from a Ambit NteeL modem for a few years now, the one that says OEM on the label.

Rated at 10v 1.2a. My box runs a lot cooler on 10v too.

It's not really a good idea to run the unit at either lower voltage, or, lower current ratings.
I can guarantee your headed for troubles, if you have an LNB that pulls more then 500ma, or have a motorized system.
The simple analogy is the VW, vs, the Big Block Chev. Run both of them flat out down the road, the VW will break down first. The VW strains to do what the big block takes in stride.
Just like your PC, it's better to have the power available and stable, to avoid problems.
