Aberdeen secured a share of the spoils against Rangers in a largely one-sided encounter at Pittodrie.

Davie Weir gave Rangers a deserved lead after 23 minutes when he rose unchallenged to head home Kevin Thomson's free-kick.

Dons midfielder Derek Young equalised with a low shot just before the break in Aberdeen's first foray forward.

Rangers substitute DeMarcus Beasley had an injury-time effort ruled out for offside as the game ended in a draw.

Novo had the first opportunity when he danced away from Andrew Considine in the penalty area but blazed his effort well over the bar.

Aberdeen were camped in their own half for the opening quarter of the game as Rangers pressed to turn their possession into goals.

Weir gave Rangers a deserved lead after 23 minutes when he rose unchallenged to head home Thomson's free-kick from 10 yards after Novo had been fouled.

The Spaniard went close to doubling Rangers' lead on the half-hour mark when he stole the ball from the feet of the dithering Scott Severin, but his chip drifted just wide of Jamie Langfield's right-hand post.

Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor was never troubled in the first half from a toothless Aberdeen attack.

Young found an unlikely equaliser on the stroke of half-time when he drilled the ball low past McGregor after Miller's effort was blocked.

Novo sliced through the Aberdeen defence after 52 minutes but tried a shot with the outside of his right foot that failed to hit the target.

Dons goalkeeper Jamie Langfield decided to liven up the second half when he inexplicably tried some dribbling inside the box and Boyd almost got Rangers' second goal.

Jean-Claude Darcheville was brought on for Novo with 15 minutes remaining as Rangers sought a winning goal.

McGregor blocked bravely at Darren Mackie's feet moments later, after the Aberdeen forward evaded Bougherra.

Substitute DeMarcus Beasley had the ball in the net in injury-time but his effort was ruled out for offside.
