Does the ps4 support an external hard drive

i just made up a portable 160gb hard drive for a friend and put a whole pile of tv series on it for him so he could watch them from his ps4 console but doesnt recognise any files

i formatted the drive in ntfs

to be honest i tried it on my xbox one first and it wouldnt kick in at all but ive tried and works a 32gb usb stick.

atleast i know for the future

Problem with fat32 is that you have a 4gb file limit, so if any of your porn is bigger than that you're stuffed :)

did it in fat as that was recommended somewhere on the net, not fat32 so gave him the drive yesterday to try

yep spot on, i had this issue a few years ago while trying to export 8gb xbox360 games to an an external drive which was formatted in fat32,ntfs ofcourse sorted that.

Does ps4 not have software that supports formatting of external drives?

Pretty shoddy if you ask me if this is not an option.

From what I've read Xbox One suports NTFS natively.

PS4 supports FAT32 and Ex-Fat. So it seems the best option is to format in Ex-Fat, and then you have no file size restrictions. I have not tested this but but don't see why it wouldn't work
