morning,

Thinking of buying a dvd/divx player that has network capabilities and I'm wondering if any one out there know of any good ones, trying to be a Begger and a chooser like, i.e the cheapest that's going.

I have the old 360 but i'm sick of listening to the fan whilst watching a film.

Thanks

The original xb0x with Xb0x Media Centre installed. Very quiet and will stream almost any media type over a network

You can pick them up for about £20-40 second hand

I would go for an HTPC if you can get one cheap enough.

Or have a go building one like me.

depends one the spec etc what u want from it etc

i thought the 360,s fans only kick in while playing a game mine does anyway.

to build myself?

I am looking at £400 tops. The majority of this will probably be the price of the case.

So there's a difficult decision for dibbers to make

£400 or £40?

I know which one I'd go for :)

What could the HTPC do over the Xbox 1, in terms of playing media?

I thought the request was for a divx/dvd player with network capabilities?

No mention of HD requirements

.....but the HTPC suggestion would be more suitable for playing hd content.

if all thats wanted is a divx player that can be networked then you really cant beat a chipped xbox

I doubt you can build a fully HD capable HTPC for £400

Well, netwoked divx players are not so easy to come by. Especially good ones.

Kiss used to do a good line in them, but I think they got bought up by Linksys or Netgear? Now they are guff.

Imo, any old PC with a quiet fan would be the best job for this. But thats just my opinion mind :)

Xbox Media Centre FTW if you don't care about hi def.

My local shop always has supply of £25 ones.

My mates by em, I soft mod em, with redireceted .xbe pointing towards XBMC and the 360 skin.

£6 for a remote.

Heaven.

Native 720p isn't great.

You have to enable 720p (by I think forcing NTSC mode). Then you can play native 720p but you get frame rate issues. processor/memory not fast/big enough that simple.

You can upscale 480p vids to 720 though.

XBMC with 480p looks class on Hi-def though. Very good software decoders.

We'll have to wait until the 360 gets hacked properly before we see anything that can do hi def. Apart from HTPC as karym6 says, but you will have to get your pennies out.

Thanks chaps lots of interest in this one.

I have a combo DVD/hard-drive/DVD writer - but the DVD drive is knackered so i can't copy what i want from the hard drive, so i was looking at being able to buy a divx player or something with a network interface so i can record to a hard drive maybe on my network and of course stream films back to it to watch on the tv.

I can do it through the 360 but mines quite noisy when it's running.

i have how ever got a dreambox that I'm looking at setting up to record....
