Unplugged my Ethernet modem, and hooked up a cloned modem via USB. My firewall pops up and says "is this a trusted network?", and I click yes. Local Area Connection 2 appears in the "LAN or High-Speed Internet" section of Network Connections, and Status is "Connected".

However, I can't access the internet.

Trying ipconfig in a command window, this is what I get:

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 82.2.xxx.xxx
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 82.2.xxx.xxx

Then type "ipconfig /renew":

Windows IP Configuration

No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while it has its media di
sconnected.
An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection 2 : Access is d
enied.

Any ideas? What should I try?

If the last set of numbers in IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 82.2.xxx.xxx are 248 to 255 then your modem is unregistered .
this may mean it has taken one of the recent firmware upgrades against clones . plenty of other threads on that here !!

Yep... 248.

Thanks for the replies, anyway.
