Ok got a mates laptop and the problem is that whenever he inserts the mains power adapter into the laptop the LED on the power adapter goes out. The laptop does nothing else, no lights blink, fan doesn't turn etc. He bought another brand new power adapter from Dell and same symptoms so that rules the adapter out. The battery is completely flat so he can't power it at all. He also borrowed a power adapter from a work colleague but same result with that. I suspect the DC Jack has blown. Anything else to check before I strip it down?

Its a long shot but have you tried it without the battery in place.

Almost certainly an issue with the mainboard somewhere I am afraid.

Could also be the power jack has come adrift or gone faulty, it happens.

Onemans suggested test is one you should carry out though. Let us know how you get on.

Yeah tried the laptop without the battery connected, same symptoms. I've ordered a DC Jack, hopefully be here Saturday or Monday at the very latest.

Cheers
