How old is the laptop ?

I would generally expect that the battery needs replacing after 3 years or so.

Unfortunately from my understanding after speaking to Dell engineer, the mains charges up the battery which then powers the laptop so your battery is in continued use or something like that.

We have around 500 dell laptops at work and 3 years seems to be the battery life, which ties in with our PC renewal cycle.

Well its a strange one to be honest as it still runs on bettery without the charger plugged in so am goin to get it die and then see if it charges again. Need to plug the other battery just to make sure it is the battery and not the laptop thats playing up.

Thanks for you help mate.

It should also run on mains with the battery out.

If it's a ni cad, as most older ones are, then that is why you have problems. They are like a memory cell and remeber how long they have been charged. You could try to reducate it by a complete discharge/recharge a few times, it sometimes works. But if you battery was on charge all the time then as oneman says sadly 3 years and end of story.
