when this is done what does it achieve?
noobish i know but just want to find out what im missing

It doesn't enable any extra features etc, it simply de-brands the router and allows it to run with the generic firmare available off the manufacturers website.
Typically, branded routers tend to be a few firmware revisions behind the generic versions but unless you suffer from one of the specific faults that the updates address then there's really little point to the firmware change.
