i have a cable which came with my virgin media router, but how do i tell if its crossover ?

If it came with a router then it should be straight as routers don't use crossover cables.
 
If the ethernet ports on your router are Auto-MDI/MDIX then you can use a crossover or a direct network cable. If not, then probably only a direct network cable will work!

But I would imagine most new routers these days could use both.
 
I didn't know both could be used.
Would routers ship with a crossover cable? I think its more likely straight through.

Have a look at the colours on the clear ends to see if they tally up against each other.
