I'd suggest a virtual machine with Linux on it then Agnes wouldn't have caught you . Actually, you could use VMWare Snapshots (or whatever Oracle calls it) to keep your VM squeaky clean in case a virus gets onto it.

Avira does consistently well in Anti-Malware comparison tests. Doesn't slow down a machine like some do.
ClamAV is pretty standard on Linux machines.
