Nearly 40 years after its invention, the humble computer mouse is likely to be phased out, according to industry experts.

Within the next three to five years the functionality of the computer mouse will become redundant, according to Gartner.

Advances in computing power are enabling the emergence of practical alternative user interfaces based on gestures, movement and facial recognition, according to the analyst firm.

Gartner’s report found that companies such as Microsoft and Intel and Apple are promoting gestural interfaces for future use.

It also found that consumer entertainment companies such as Sony, Panasonic and NEC are demonstrating applications using facial and movement recognition.

Analyst at Gartner and author of the report Steve Prentice declared that using a mouse within desktop environments was fine, but “for home entertainment or working on a notebook it’s over.”

However, there are some in the industry that believe Gartner’s predictions are jumping the gun.

George Foot, director of sales and marketing at Kensington believes that gestural interfaces have advanced, there is still room for the humble mouse.

“There will undoubtedly be change, driven by technology. Just look at the impact the Wii has had and how Wi-Fi has changed how and where we work. People need to be able to use and interact with their data as efficiently as possible, but new multifunctional mice have proven more than capable of meeting this need.”

“Gartner’s predictions for the end of the mouse are ahead of their time. The mouse is an integral part of how we interact with our PCs and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.”

I'll guarantee we're all still using mice in 5 years.

Facial recognition my arse!

I'd bet your very likely to be correct.

It would be interesting to see who sues M$ first though for injury caused by repetitive strain to the facial or eyeball muscles !

im to ugly for facial stuff lol and seems so are you lol if you think facial recog is your arse

I'm rather attached to my mouse. I like it, a nice simple tool.

@witchy: like your new avvy!

i wonder if u make a fist and shake it will it take u to a porn site???????

Incidentally...

Steven Hawking uses one cheek muscle to communicate.
I find that fascinating, but I don't think us lesser mortals are anywhere near that stage yet.

He has adapted, as this is the only means of communication left open to him.

The rest of us will have to make to with sliding our hands/mice through coke cans & half eaten burgers for the meantime :)

As we all know our emotions effect our facial expressions, if I get angry what would my computer do, if i got randy what then?

It's bullshit, I just hope no-one paid this guy to research this crap.

BTW, my cats days are numbered.

more chance of using touch screens, facial recognition, yes but in 20 years

Technology will always move forward.

But as for it actually being better and most of all more convenient and comfortable for the user?

Most technologies in this field fail miserably due to the fact that it just does not work.

Imagine a fighter pilot on a mission to take out 5 enemy posts, he uses his hands and the joystick or whatever yeah? Come on, lets see him pull faces instead to hit the targets!!

They already pull faces afterwards, good one them, but to actually write a story saying this sort of technology is going to take over is total and utter bs.

You might be suprised at some of the work that has been done in this very field. Targetting systems that track what you are looking at are real as are some very sophisticated helmet mounted heads-up display systems which keeps all relevant information in your sight line no matter which way your head is pointing !

can you imagine being on ya pc for hours you would end up looking sylvester stallone just when he is shouting ADRIAN!!!! lol

You are spot on m8. That technology is well advanced.
