hi i know some one will be able to tell me if i can just use an ordinary f type splitter or do i need a booster

the reason i am asking was i tried one and all it seemed to do was freeze up my picture or should i say it "stuttered"it was like it was trying to catch itself up removed it and it was fine any ideas???
