David Beckham saw red after sarcastically applauding a referee like his England team-mate Wayne Rooney.

Sporting icon Beckham was sent off for clapping the official while playing for Real Madrid against Valencia.

The England captain then had to watch his team lose 2-1 from the sideline, as his dismissal reduced his squad to nine men at the Bernabeu.

Rooney was red-carded in similar circumstances during Manchester United's Champions League game against Villarreal last month.

The young fooballing ace had slapped his hands together under referee's Kim Milton Nielsen's nose.

The red card on Sunday is Beckham's second this month after being sent off for England in the World Cup qualifying match against Austria.

His latest dismissal follows a clash with Rooney over his hot-temper during international matches.

Beckham's famous first red card for England was given by Nielsen against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup finals.

Rooney is most probably in a happier mood after turning 20 years old today.

But will his potential to be one of the world's greatest footballers be realised? Or like so many others might his young promise fade away?

One of the pitfalls Wayne will have to avoid is mixing with the wrong crowd. For Paul Gascoigne, this led to alcohol addiction.

Injury could also threaten the young talent. That was the case with Norman Whiteside of Northern Ireland who, at 17, was the youngest footballer to ever play in a World Cup.
