Batman Begins was a box office success

Batman Begins starring
Christian Bale as the comic book superhero has been named 2005's favourite film, according to the Total Film Readers' Awards.

Scottish actor Ian McDiarmid, who played Supreme Chancellor Palpatine in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, won best movie villain.
About 15,000 readers voted, and Mickey Rourke won man of the year for his role as street fighter Marv in Sin City.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory's squirrels won best movie animal.

War of the Worlds star Dakota Fanning, 11, was awarded best child actor for her part in Steven Spielberg's film about alien invasion of earth, which starred Tom Cruise.

Nev Pierce, deputy editor of Total Film magazine, said: "Batman Begins was a smart but funny reinvention of an iconic figure and had fantastic performances.

"It was also excellently directed by Christopher Nolan. Film fans want more and Batman Begins overcomes the horrible taste that previous outing Batman and Robin left in people's mouths.

"We had more people voting for our awards this year than ever before and 2006 looks set to be another great year at the box office."
Last year's hero of the year was US President George Bush for his unwitting role in the Michael Moore anti-Iraq war documentary Fahrenheit 9/11.
