Microsoft has said it has no plans to make its premium Xbox Live Gold service free of charge, insisting it will remain at £39.99 per year.

The firm announced that it would end charges for its Games For Windows Live during the Gamefest event last week, with industry rumours suggesting it may do the same with its Xbox Live Gold service.

But Microsoft quickly moved to end the speculation after a spokesman told MCV: "For only a few pounds a month, Xbox Live Gold members already get access to the best online gaming network in the industry, the ability to play and watch countless demos and trailers before the rest of the gaming community, and video chat and messaging.

"With the new Xbox experience coming this fall, we plan to give even more reasons why Xbox Live Gold is the best bargain in the industry."
