I have been watching football for a long time, and used to play it in my younger days.
The plan used to be, get the ball, and try to get a goal.
If you can't get a goal get a corner?
Getting a corner is simple.
You get the ball near to the oppositions goal line, and if you can't get past the defender, you kick the ball against him and it goes out for a corner.
More and more I am seeing players get into that position, but then they turn back and start passing the ball backwards, as though they are frightened to get a corner.
I watched Middlesborough play Bristol, Borough got two early corners by accident and nearly scored with both.
After that they had loads of chances to get more corners, but didn't try.
They were very lucky to qualify in the end.

I think a team has a better chance of scoring if a winger passes back so the defender can get the ball in the box rather than getting a corner because the defence can get organised and get men on the posts when theres a corner. They cant do this from open play.

I get what your saying though, it does make sence to do the easy thing and get a corner rather than trying to skip past the man.
