Why do Android need to put pet names to the OS?

Is it to appeal to children? Mum i want a phone with Jellybean software?

It's just that Android have gone down the confectionery route.

But why?

Secrecy, so if they are developing a new product only certain people will get to know.

So X team could be working on project genesis for example, and team Y will be working on project demise.

They will be isolated from eachother.

They could actually be working for the same outcome, but depending on the results it will dictate what comes to market.
