Al Jazeera buys ITN archive

Arabic news channel Al Jazeera has bought access rights to ITN’s news and video archive. The deal gives Al Jazeera rights to more than 800,000 hours of material stretching back more than 30 years, and to access ITN’s other print-based source material that spans three centuries.

Al Jazeera, which has a thriving documentary channel, will be able to access the ITN archive for up to 5 years. The archive comes from ITN’s own resources plus material acquired over the years by ITN from Granada, Channel 4, Reuters and British Pathe.

One of many moments contained uniquely in the footage is an interview ITN carried out with Margaret Thatcher by ITN’s Michael Brunson in which she cried over losing the prime minister’s job.

The licence with Al Jazeera permits the broadcaster unlimited global transmission of the footage on the Al Jazeera news channel, plus access through sites like YouTube.

To be fair, Al-Jazeera is possibly one of the few impartial news agencies in the middle east.

got a bad name for themselves in the west by showing al-qaueda videos and reports of them showing beheadings which im sure several newspapers retracted the statements.... people only heard about them after 9/11 happened and immediatly associated them with terrorists...when really they are same as our bbc in a way

They didnt get a bad name for showing those videos - as you say they are treated like the BBC of the middle east with a news network that extends globally. They are also indpendant, so they are possibly the best choice new service to send things like this to and they often show articles that are at odds with middle eastern governments views.

Plus, the BBC and ITN amongst others in the UK also showed these videos, just not to their conclusion.
