Other Adding subs to a video file

Hey, anyone know how to add subs to a video file? I wanna hardcode them but not re-encode the video again. Using handbrake unless anyone knows anything better?

You cannot hardcode subtitles without re-enoding a video, even if you keep the same video format.

Could you not softcode the subtitles by inserting a format like SRT or SSA into the container; lots of devices support these formats these days?
